The Reading Compass

Research shows that children who are not proficient readers by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school

(Annie E. Casey Foundation).

Reading is the foundation for every other skill a young man will need in life. Through The Reading Compass, Northstar Atlanta provides interactive literacy workshops, tutoring, and culturally relevant reading experiences that help boys strengthen comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking.

Our approach integrates storytelling, project-based learning, and mentorship to make reading engaging and relatable. Boys not only improve academically but also discover the joy of learning and self-expression

The Guiding Light connects boys with caring mentors who model integrity, discipline, and compassion. Through one-on-one and group mentorship, participants gain positive role models who help them navigate academic, social, and emotional challenges.

Each mentor-mentee relationship is built on consistency, trust, and shared growth, focusing on leadership, goal setting, and character development. The program also includes leadership labs, service projects, and college and career readiness experiences

The Strength
Within

Studies show that students who participate in social-emotional learning programs demonstrate an 11% improvement in academic performance and significant gains in well-being

(Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning – CASEL).

The Strength Within helps boys develop the emotional tools needed to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and empathy. Through group discussions, mindfulness exercises, and SEL-based workshops, participants learn how to identify emotions, manage stress, and build healthy relationships. By integrating emotional wellness into daily programming, Northstar ensures that boys grow not only in knowledge and leadership but also in self-understanding and stability.

Partner with Northstar to create safe spaces for boys to learn mindfulness,

confidence, and emotional balance.
